Ötzi the Iceman is a remarkably well-preserved natural mummy of a man who lived around 5,300 years ago (Copper Age), discovered in glacial ice in the Ötztal Alps on the Austrian-Italian border in 1991.

Offering unprecedented insights into prehistoric life through his body, clothing, and tools, including a copper axe, arrows, and a backpack, revealing details about his health (like Lyme disease), genetics, diet, and likely cause of death (arrow wound and head trauma).

Ötzi the Iceman, holds the record for the oldest, most extensive tattoos, with 61 identified markings, primarily lines and crosses, on his wrist, lower back, and legs. Created by injecting soot or ash into small, hand-poked incisions, these markings are believed to have served therapeutic purposes for joint degeneration.

The 61 tattoos are arranged in 19 groups, mostly consisting of parallel black lines (1–3 mm wide, 7–40 mm long) and a few cross shapes.

Major concentrations exist on his lower back (lumbar spine), ankles, and left wrist. Microscopic analysis revealed that soot (carbon) was rubbed into small, linear, hand-poked punctures or incisions.

The markings align with areas of “age-conditioned or strain-induced degeneration” (such as his lower back, knees, and ankles), suggesting they were likely used for therapeutic or medicinal pain relief, similar to acupuncture.

While some debate existed regarding whether the marks were caused by, rather than treated with, the tattooing process, the high concentration on joints indicates a purposeful, potentially medicinal, practice, according to New Scientist.

Pain during tattooing isn’t a measure of toughness. It isn’t about who’s “stronger” or who can sit longer. Every body processes sensation differently, nerve density, skin type, hydration, stress levels, sleep, hormones, and even where you are in your life that day all play a role.

Two people can receive the same tattoo in the same spot and experience it in completely different ways. That doesn’t make one of them weaker. It just makes them human.

What truly matters isn’t how much you endure, but how present and intentional you are in the process. A tattoo is not a test, it’s a collaboration between artist and client.

At SixtyInk, we see pain not as something to “fight,” but something to understand, manage, and move through with respect. Your experience should feel safe, controlled, and supported, no matter your personal threshold.

There are also powerful ways to guide the mind and reduce how intensely the body perceives pain. Slow, steady breathing helps regulate your nervous system and prevents tension from amplifying sensation.

Focusing your attention, on music, conversation, visual imagery, or simply counting breaths can shift the brain away from the stimulus. Many clients find that relaxing the body instead of bracing against the needle makes a real difference: the more you tense, the louder the sensation becomes.

Finally, preparation matters. Arriving well-rested, hydrated, and having eaten properly stabilizes blood sugar and improves pain tolerance. Trust in your artist, communicate openly, and remember: discomfort is temporary, but the artwork is permanent. Your tattoo is not about proving resilience, it’s about creating something meaningful, on your terms.

Hi, I’m Claudio Traina, an Italian Tattoo Artist.
Since 2012, I’ve been creating bespoke tattoos, working between Italy and England,

and traveling the world to share my craft with a select clientele.

I’ve had the privilege of being featured at top tattoo conventions globally, and my work has appeared in the most prestigious tattoo magazines. Along the way, I’ve earned multiple tattoo awards,

which reflect my dedication to both the art and the craft.

I specialize in Geometric, Blackwork, and Super Fine Line tattoos, focusing on

precision and unique, custom designs that push boundaries.

In recent years, I’ve been fortunate to work with celebrities, musicians, and global brands. From exclusive private sessions to pop-up events, I collaborate with names like Tinder, Call of Duty/Activision, White Fox, Jo & The Juice,

Every tattoo I create is a one-of-a-kind experience, tailored to those who seek something special.

TATTOO AFTERCARE GUIDE

Your new tattoo needs to be kept covered by the dressing applied by the tattoo artist for at least 1 to 4 days (only if you artist apply the second skin)

After removing the dressing with warm water gently wash your new tattoo, don't use any aggressive soap. Then dry gently with a soft clean towel. Avoid rubbing the skin.

Next apply a moisturising cream as advised by your tattoo artist.

Wash and apply cream 3 times a day for 3 weeks. After 28 days your tattoo should be fully healed.

Avoid touching your new tattoo unnecessarily. Do not pick or scratch your healing tattoo.

Avoid saunas, swim or sun beds until your new tattoo is fully healed.

Try to wear loose, cotton clothing to minimize rubbing and irritation to your new tattoo, don't use clingfilm.
